At Star International School, we believe that the learning of Maths provides children with a powerful set of tools to help them understand the world around them. These tools include basic number facts, logical reasoning, problem-solving skills, and the ability to think in abstract ways.

Maths is taught every day, and Maths lessons provide opportunities for whole-class teaching, group activities and individual learning. These lessons are planned carefully by teachers in order to ensure that all children are included and that lessons are varied, fun and challenging. Maths may also be covered in other subjects, when appropriate, such as Science and Geography.

By following the new British National Curriculum, we aim to ensure that all pupils:
• Become fluent in the basic skills of Maths, through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils have real-life understanding and are able to recall and apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately to solve problems
• Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, identifying relationships and generalisations, and developing arguments, justification or proof using mathematical language
• Solve problems by applying their Maths to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions

Basic Number Facts and Mental Maths
We place strong emphasis on mental mathematics as this underpins all other areas of Maths. Children are taught to develop a wide range of strategies so that they can solve problems and answer questions. We also encourage children to share their ideas and explain the strategies they have used.

At Star International School, we aim to engage and motivate children by ensuring that teaching and learning is interactive, links with other areas of the curriculum and with real life situations.
